To be doing what you like and enjoying what you do for a living is to be happily skilled. However, as automation displaces job roles, millions of livelihood earners, including students and professionals, will be required to acquire and sharpen skills In demand.

Everyone understands that it is now essential to regularly sharpen your skills, upskill and adapt your skills to newer job roles. The real question is how?

Here are three steps – naturally appealing and rational, that will help you discover the answer yourself. Step up and go for it!

1. Know skills in-demand
If you search the internet for in-demand skills globally, a tsunami of search results will stare at you to go through. It will be an experience like going into a restaurant and being presented with a big fat menu card that is easy to read but difficult to comprehend. An irritant when you wish to quickly decide on the food to order to satisfy your hunger and unique taste buds! Before you blink, another menu card of beverages is presented to you! Frustrating.

Most end up ordering the usual to satisfy their intense hunger, thus forsaking the opportunity to discover other food choices that could have been delicious to taste and delightful to eat. Replace food with skills, and give yourself some food for thought!

For a better experience, invest precious time in research and make a personal list of in-demand skills over time. Research from curated sources and get familiar with the turbulence of skills sought locally and globally by industry. Sought includes soft skills since there is nothing ‘soft’ about soft skills anymore. They are now as vital as the traditional hard skills.

2. Know your skills PH (including what it is!)
Knowing your highly balanced skills – PH is crucial. What is it? It is your intrinsic natural potential (P) to build and strengthen a particular set of skills – P, and your happiness – H, at building, sharpening and executing a set of skills.

How can you know your skills PH? Imagine you get to taste a variety of food items from the menu card, one at a time, one by one. While you will already know some you like, over time, you will discover new items you were unaware of but develop an instant connection with or vice-versa!

Soon enough, you will have a longer list of what you like, what is in supply (because it is in demand) or short in supply (because it has no takers).

Similarly, when you get to experience (taste) a set of skills, you can differentiate between:

  • Skills for which you have a natural potential (P) you can build and strengthen
  • Skills for which you have an intrinsic liking and that you are happy (H) to execute

The intersection of skills P and skills H is your skills PH!

In a way, a highly balanced skills-PH is like water – a universal solvent essential to survive and thrive. However, unlike water, the tastes and preferences of individuals are unique, and so are everyone’s highly balanced skills-PH scores.

3. Marrying your skills PH with industry needs
Once you know your skills-PH, match it with your list of in-demand industry skills. For example, assume you have highly balanced skills-PH for arithmetic. You enjoy and are good at it and can add, subtract, multiply, and divide (say) fifteen-digit numbers correctly on the fly. It is a happy experience executing it. You love it. However, you discover that arithmetic is not a sought-after industry skill since most math calculations are automated and done using computer software. Would it make sense for you to thump your chest about no takers for your fantastic math skills? All you can do is enjoy your arithmetic skills without expecting them to earn you a livelihood.

In contrast, assume you also discovered that your interactive teaching skills are in demand. People seem to enjoy learning math with you. Would that be a door to open for you to earn a livelihood? Or even better, would that open a flood of opportunities for you to build your math curriculum and programs to execute interactively offline/ online and as a MOOC? The answer is yours to decide!

Marrying your highly balanced skills-PH with industry needs kills ills that disrupt livelihoods.

Conclusion
Individual potential is a hidden treasure of skills. Curiosity and intelligence alone cannot unlock it. Human cognition, know-how and generative AI can be of value for you to discover 80+ growth skills to boost your strength skills for success. You can get access to short videos of real-world skills application examples everyone can relate to and hence appreciate the value of each skill. You can measure personal skills-PH on each of the intertwined skills. Skills quizzes, competitions and hackathons aid incremental learning while helping you discover your highly balanced skills-PH. Follow-up action for practical upskilling to build and sharpen skills boosts your productivity, performance, progress, and success sustainably.

In the 21st century, work is the worship of skills!
